No F1 return 'soon' for Honda

The chief executive of Honda has again suggested that the Japanese car giant could return to F1 in future, but has insisted that it wouldn't be any time soon.

Honda quit the sport at the end of the 2008 season and eventually secured a deal with team boss Ross Brawn to save the Brackley-based squad – which could clinch the drivers' and constructors' titles this weekend at the Honda-owned Suzuka circuit.

Earlier this week, Takanobu Ito insisted that Honda had no regrets over its decision to leave the sport and said the company was grateful for the way in which Brawn had taken the team on following its departure.

However, Ito insisted that a return under the current business conditions wouldn't be a feasible option and said that things would need to change before Honda would consider returning to the grid.

“It would be difficult to re-enter Formula One under current business conditions,” he told Reuters. “But in the future, if it became a competition based on fuel efficiency and performance, as well as posing a technical challenge, then we would surely want to take part.

“I do not see that happening in the near future.”
